Missions

DFUMC

From the beginning, Dalton First United Methodist Missions
have been guided by the commission which our dear Savior
gave to His disciples when, after His death, resurrection and
time with His disciples, ascended to His Father:

(letters from our missionaries)

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
                                                      Matthew 28:19-20

Also remembering His earlier Words,"…Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these, you have done it unto me." Matthew 25:34-40.

The Dalton First United Methodist Church Missions budget for and members support, financially and physically, sixteen local missions.Sunday school classes and small groups add more to DFUMC support. We now work with some nineteen foreign missionaries whom all but one have visited in our church. In order to support an active and participatory Missions Committee, DFUMC began an affiliation with the Mission Society for United Methodists (http://themissionsociety.org/) in 2000 which helped to coordinate having missionaries in our church, corresponding with them while in service, and pairing with them on short-terms missions. From this, a more personal relationship with our missionaries and their support teams was born. Since 2000, we have held the annual Mission or Global Impact Celebrations and raising funding through Faith Promise Pledges over and above Church tithes and giving. Many of our foreign missions are engaged in raising up and training nationals to become local pastors. Reverend Joe Peabody did such training in Zambia in October 2008. The Missions Committee and support personnel maintain contact with our missionaries and pray for them regularly in our meetings.

Under the leadership of the late Becky Kenney, and now Jim Davis, many short-term missions have gone out from DFUMC these past years. Peru has been a special place due to the leadership of the Ivey family who so affectively minister to people there. In January 2008, a team went back to Peru and in December 2008, for the first time, a team traveled to Kenya, teaming up with Michael Agwanda who has a ministry to AIDS orphans there. The Gene Tibbs ministry was in Belize, Honduras and Appalachia in 2008, Nancy Bell was on a mission in Israel with Donna Petrel for 3 weeks in October.

Most of our "short-termers" pay their own way, while our budget tries to pay for medicines and supplies for the mission team. We can raise funds for those who need assistance, especially for critical skill sets in needed locations.

After each mission trip, there are usually videos and pictures available for review. Missions committee members are always willing to share these presentations with Sunday School Classes or any who are interested.

We are for the first time separating our local and foreign mission celebrations.
